Quick Questions: Billing Rates By Role

A common consulting technique is to bill clients by role. In other words, consider setting your client billing rates by the type of responsibility you are performing on each job.

Customized Employee Billing Rates

Even if you are a sole-consultancy, you can do this. Of course, it works best with multiple consultants on a single job. But still, billing by role has the advantage of splitting high-value work out from low-value work.  Customers understand this. And you can easily reconfigure your consultancy to take advantage of it.

Examples:

  1. Project Manager ($250 per hour)
  2. Engineer ($150 per hour)
  3. Support Techs ($75 per hour)

Give each employee a default role. Then set the role they will be taking on each project. For instance, a project manager on Project A may be a simple engineer on Project B. Each project may be different, and the rates for those projects will also likely vary.
